SUMMARY:Culture Change in Nonprofits: from fuzzy concept to practical action
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nMany nonprofit leaders know their organization needs to change -especially given the pressures we are under. Fewer know where to start. And when people say “we need to change our culture”; that phrase often creates more confusion than clarity. \nThis two-part workshop takes culture change seriously as a management challenge\, and treats it as one you can actually work on. The workshop is intended for nonprofit EDs and senior leaders; not just for the Heads of People & Culture. Board members will also benefit by learning about their role in organizational culture formation. You will leave with a clearer sense of what organizational culture is\, how to recognize it in your daily work\, and what you can do to shape it.\nThe sessions are grounded in the current pressures facing nonprofits: the need to rethink programming\, revenue strategies\, and operating models. Culture is not separate from those challenges. It either supports the direction you need to move in\, or it works against it. Across the two sessions\, you will explore what organizational culture actually consists of and how it shows up in practice. You will examine the gap between the culture your organization says it has and the behaviors people see day to day. You will work with practical tools to influence culture as a leader or manager\, and learn how to track whether change is actually\ntaking hold. Her work focuses on leadership development\, team coaching\, change management\, governance and organizational culture. \nWhile her practitioner background mainly was grounded in the international development sector (World Bank\, United Nations\, think tanks and nonprofits)\, her research\, senior leadership development as well as change management work has focused on cross-sectoral New York state level as well as international nonprofit\, NGO and philanthropic organizations. She is co-author of the book ‘Between Power and Irrelevance: the Future of Transnational NGOs’ and host of the podcast NGO Soul+Strategy. This workshop covers the basics of grant writing\, including assessing feasibility and deciding whether to apply; developing your plans; and the proposal contents. She has been director of Quality Assurance/Improvement at two large multiservice agencies and was an early advocate of the development and use of outcome measurements in child welfare. Ms. Bowie was a co-founder of the New York City Outcomes Group\, in which foster care agencies collaborated in the development of foster care outcomes and data analysis methods. \nMs. Bowie’s work with not-for-profits in and around New York City since 1998 has spanned projects from planning and analysis\, project management\, strategic planning\, to report and grant writing in sectors as diverse as child welfare\, supportive housing\, workforce development\, early childhood education\, mental health\, HIV/AIDS\, and education.
