Day One is seeking an experienced consultant to join the Executive Director as an interim leader. The selected candidate would provide operating and strategic oversight of Day One’s administrative functions during a transformational moment in its organizational development. Day One is interested in candidates that have 10+ years of experience directly or indirectly overseeing resource development and finance for a nonprofit organization(s). Additional skills in operations, communications and human resources are a plus. A minimum commitment of 6 months is required.
Day One is embarking on an examination of our organizational structure in light of rapid growth and several years of work and reflection on its journey in becoming an anti-racist organization. Day One will be partnering with other consultants during 2022 to explore what organizational structure best fits its values and needs for the years to come. The
Interim Administrator selected will maintain and support systems during the upcoming planning process related to any potential reorganization.
Range of Responsibilities
Day One has a wide range of funding sources and particularly complex finances. With a budget of $3.7 million, Day One has revenue sources that include about 67% government grants (including 1 federal, 5 state and 2 major city sources), several foundations, individual and corporate supporters, and a small amount of fee-for-service income. Day One has (since January) an outsourced company handling its day-to-day fiscal management. There is no internal finance team. There is a Manager of Operations & HR and a Manager of Development & Communications, both of whom started in Fall, 2021. Day One uses ADP Total Source to handle payroll and administration of its benefits.
Day-to-day execution of this position could include interfacing with the Executive Director, staff, board, and consultants (finance and/or development); managing staff, shepherding ongoing efforts surrounding Day One’s strategic plan, grant writing/reporting; strategic analysis of the development and use of funds, recruitment of new staff, and other tasks determined by skills and capacity. The position will require some weekday flexibility and would require 3-5 days per week, primarily remote, with some in person presence required.
Organizational Background and Structure
Founded in 2003, Day One partners with youth, 24 and under, to end dating abuse and domestic violence through preventive education, legal advocacy, supportive services and leadership development. All programming is specialized to address the learning, patterns of abuse, and services for youth with intersecting identities. Day One provides counseling, case management, and legal advice and representation to survivors of intimate partner violence. Day One’s preventive programs educate youth and adults about dating violence. Workshops teach teens about signs of abuse. In year-round youth development programs, Day One builds the next generation of young leaders.
For the past 5 years Day One has operated with a 4-person leadership team. Led by the Executive Director/Founder, the rest of the team included a Director of Law & Policy, a Director of Programs, and a Director of Finance & Administration. This structure was
established in 2016 when the organization had about 18 staff members. (See organizational chart below.)
Four additional supervisors make up the next layer of management: Associate Directors of Training & Community Programs, Social Services, School-Based Services, and Development. As of May, 2022, the Director of Finance & Administration and the Associate Director of Development positions are vacant (consultants are filling these roles for now). The Board of Directors has 12 members and meets bimonthly.
