Job Posting: Teaching Artist Assistant

About BxCM: Bronx Children’s Museum currently exists as a “museum without walls” and serves almost 18,000 Bronx residents annually. The Museum uses innovative mobile programming to engage children and adults in the arts and sciences. The museum also creates temporary exhibits and serves after-school and summer needs throughout the Bronx at community-based organizations, schools, shelters, libraries, local festivals and parks. The Museum has partnered with the City of New York to create a permanent home in a former powerhouse along the Harlem River in the South Bronx that will enable it to serve 75,000 children per year. Construction has begun on the 13,000 sq. ft. site with a total of 7,500 sq. ft. of exhibitions with an expected opening date in spring 2022.

About the Job: We are looking for an experienced art educator who can serve as a Teaching Artist Assistant within our Education & Programs department who can accomplish the these basic tasks:

• Be a positive, upbeat, community driven individual who enjoys working with children and multi-tasking.
  Provide essential support to Teaching Artists by creating opportunities for children and caregivers to engage with our programming. Our programs focus on mediums such as Music, Dance, Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Natural Sciences, and Community Engagement.
• Assist with set-up, cleanup, and daily logistics
• Organize and storing materials on site
• Sustain a clean storage space on site
• Engage children in daily activities and lesson plans while being a resource to the teaching artist on site
• Document classroom experiences through photographs and testimonies of participants
• Classroom Management: Teaching Artist Assistant will actively participate in classroom activities and assist the Museum Teaching Artists in any way possible
• Assist with trips, special events, and program culminations
• Ensure all children are signed-out during pick-up and providing parents with an overview of their child’s daily performance or behavior
• Serve as a representative of the Bronx Children’s Museum to the outside world through various points of contact

• The hours and schedule of this position will be part-time and vary depending on programs and programming requirements. Opportunities for additional hours based on skills, interest and need
• This position reports to the Arts Program Manager
• Travel to outreach events and off-site schools within the Bronx is required
• Some weekend and/or evening work will be required
• This position is a busy, fast paced job that requires someone who is comfortable moving around a lot
• Looking to fill this position ASAP
• Pay is $20/hr

• Have a love and enthusiasm for working with children and their families
• Have prior experience working with young children in a formal or informal education setting; ideally 3 years
• Have a background or strong interest in arts education
• Have at least a HS Diploma or BFA (ideally) in education, the arts, or a related field
• Have technical painting or sculptural skills
• Have passion for education and learning
• Have strong written and verbal communication as well as critical thinking skills
• Are warm, friendly, and outgoing
• Are willing to learn new skills and grow into a position of leadership within the department
• Are attentive to detail, willing to learn, and team oriented
• Are bilingual (Spanish) is a plus
